Anay Ngawang Chodak (b. 1980) is a devoted Buddhist practitioner and a direct descendant in the lineage of Repa Dorje Chang, one of Jetsun Milarepa’s yogi disciples. He is a Tibetan traditional thangka master and a Tibetan contemporary artist who lives between Kathmandu, Nepal and New York City.

As the artist-in-residence from 2003 to 2021, he has dedicated his artistic mastery to one of the most notable andextensive Buddhist projects, the visionary teachings of the Great Fifth Dalai Lama dedicated to His Holiness the 14thDalai Lama and Rang Jung Neljorma Khandro Kunga Bhuma Rinpoche. As part of this project, he also completed mural thangka paintings in the sanctum sanctorum of the five-story Great Stupa in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, India.

Anay Ngawang Chodak reimagines his roots in ancient Buddhist art, which originates from India’s Nalanda tradition. With a fusion of styles from New a Paubha, Kashmiri-style Alchi, and Tibetan art, he merges these iconographies to present a unique and modern interpretation, particularly in the context of female energy as a divine source of wisdom.

He explores the symbolism of the 'interconnectedness of our existence’ by illuminating outer beauty and inner philosophical aspects, thus forming a thoughtful reflection of the science of the mind.

He emphasizes the importance of preserving and representing Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhist art in a modern context to enrich the global cultural and art scene. Ngawanghopes his meditative Dharma art will contribute to illuminating the path to fostering a universal collective vision for a more positive and compassionate world.

Following a transformative residency in Dharamsala, India, Anay Ngawang Chodak's art journey led him to exhibit his work at prominent venues, including the Siddhartha Art Gallery and Wind Horse Art Gallery in Kathmandu, Nepal, and featured in the curatorial collection for the Other Art Fair in Santa Monica, CA and Brooklyn, NY. His upcoming solo exhibitions are planned at Arushi Arts Gallery in New Delhi, India and Kate Oh Gallery in NYC.
